| What Is a Module? |
| A module is a musical idea, however small or large, that is repeated, manipulated and developed to form a larger musical structure. A fugue subject is a module. The various motivic ideas that comprise the fugue subject are modules. A sonata theme is a module, and the various rhythmic, harmonic and motivic ideas that comprise that theme are also modules. The theme for a set of variations is a module, as are its various component phrases and ideas. In a large set of variations - the last movement of Brahms' fourth symphony, for example - groups of variations function as modules. |
